Cross - Granny Square #2

This second Cross - Granny Square uses my Granny Pocket Prayer Cloth as a basis and then I worked it out to use the traditional Granny Square pattern for subsequent rounds.

Cross - Granny Square #2

Dimensions: 4 rounds = 5 inches x 6 inches

4 rounds = about 30 yards worsted weight yarn, size G (4.25 mm) crochet hook

ch = chain
dc = double crochet
dtr = double treble
sl st = slip stitch

ch 5, join with sl st to form ring
r1      ch 3, 2 dc in ring
    ch 3, 3 dc in ring
    ch 5, 3 dtr in ring
    ch 5, 3 dc in ring
    ch 3, join in top of 1st ch-3 with sl st

r2    ch 3, dc in next 2 dc
    2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch-3 sp
    dc in next 3 dc
    5 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch-5 sp
    dc in next 3 dtr
    2 dc, ch 2, 5 dc in ch-5 sp
    dc in next 3 dc
    2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in ch-3 sp
    join with sl st in top of 1st ch-3

Round 3 establishes the pattern for a rectangular traditional granny square

r3    sl st in next dc, ch 3, 2 dc in same dc, ch 1
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    (sk 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1) 2 times
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    sk 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    sk 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1, sk 3 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 1
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    join with sl st in top of 1st ch 3

r4    sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-1 sp
    ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-1 sp, ch 1
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 3 times
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 2 times
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 3 times
    3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 1
    3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1
    join with sl st in top of 1st ch 3

Continue working subsequent rounds as for round 4; sl st to the first ch-1 sp, then ch 3, 2 dc in the same space.  Work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in each corner ch-2 sp.  Work 3 dc in each ch-1 sp along each side separated by a ch 1.  Work as many rounds as needed for desired size.

Instructions were written for one color yarn.  If changing colors fasten off the end of each round, join new color with sl st in any ch-1 sp, then work corners and sides according to pattern.

Peace be with you

  3. This is very nice. I am going to use a white colour yarn for Row 1 ie, the cross and the rest of the rows in navy blue colour. These are the colours representing my church. I hope I will be able to complete it nicely.
