Angel Pocket Prayer Shawl

Materials and Instructions (written in US terms):

Angel Pocket Prayer Cloth

Measures 4 inches wide and 3.5 inches long. Gauge is not important.

7-8 yards worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook (5 mm)

ch = chain
dc = double crochet
dtr = double treble
rnd = round
sl st = slip stitch
sts = stitches
tr = treble crochet
yo = yarn over

3-tr cluster: 
*yo twice, insert hook in ring (yo, draw yarn through 2 loops on hook twice) * [2 loops on hook]
repeat from * to * [3 loops on hook] 
repeat from * to * [4 loops on hook]
yo, draw yarn through 4 loops on hook.

Instructions:

Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.

rnd 1
wing: ch 3, dc in ring, ch 3, sl st in ring

head: ch 4, 3-tr cluster [see above], ch 4, sl st in ring

wing: same as above

skirt: ch 7, (dtr in ring, ch 1) 3 times, dtr in ring, ch 7, sl st in ring


rnd 2    work this round in back loop of rnd 1 stitches

wing: sl st in next 3 ch sts,
in dc (sl st, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st) ,
sl st in next 3 ch sts

head: sl st in each st of head [4 ch, top of cluster, 4 ch]

wing: same as above

skirt: sl st in each st of skirt [7 ch, 7 sts across bottom, 7 ch]

sl st in back loop of 1st sl st.  Fasten off. Draw yarn end to back. Sew in loose ends.

Cross Pocket Prayer Shawl

In October 2015 I created my Granny Pocket Prayer Shawl.  I am humbled by how many views it has had these last two years.

A few weeks ago, I created another Cross Pocket Prayer Shawl.  I hope you like it just as well.

This is great for using up small scraps of yarn from other projects.

Materials and Instructions (written in US terms):

Cross Pocket Prayer Cloth

Measures 4 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. Gauge is not important.

5 yards worsted weight yarn
Size H crochet hook (5 mm)

ch = chain
dc = double crochet
dtr = double treble
rnd = round
sl st = slip stitch
sts = stitches

picot = ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook

Ch 5, sl st in 1st ch to form ring

rnd 1    (ch 3, dc in ring, ch 3, sl st in ring)
    repeat between ( ) 2 times more
    ch 5, dtr in ring, ch 5, sl st in ring

rnd 2    work this round in back loop of round 1 stitches
    (sl st in next 3 ch sts, sl st in top of dc, picot, sl st in top of same dc, sl st in next 3 ch sts)
    repeat between ( ) 2 times
    sl st in next 5 ch sts, sl st in top of dtr, picot, sl st in top of same dtr, sl st in next 5 ch sts
    end with sl st in back loop of 1st sl st on rnd

Finish off, draw end to back of work.  Weave in loose ends.

Pocket Prayer Shawls, aka Pocket Prayer Cloths

I subscribe to a weekly e-newsletter from Lion Brand that highlights new patterns and contains articles about knit and crochet projects.  In a one of their newsletters was an article about Pocket Prayer Shawls.  I was familiar with Prayer Shawl projects, but had not heard about the smaller, very portable prayer cloths, which are small enough to carry in a purse or pocket.

The idea appealed to me, since the pocket prayer cloths work up very quickly. 

The Lion Brand newsletter article mentioned Southern Belle Crochet, which has easy instructions for a Mini Prayer Cloth.

I searched the web for other patterns available.  One site suggested making a granny square to use as a pocket prayer cloth.  While the center of a granny square does look like a cross, it isn't well defined.

I played around a bit with the granny square idea and came up with my own design.

August 2017: A few months back a person asked if this could be modified so it could be made into a baptismal blanket.  Here is my rectangular Cross Granny Square. 

Granny Pocket Prayer Cloth

Before you begin, say a prayer for the person who will receive the prayer cloth.

Materials:
About 10 yards worsted weight yarn, size G crochet hook

• Use cotton or 100% wool instead of acrylic if the prayer cloth will be sent to someone in the military, a police officer, firefighter or other first responder.  Acrylic melts and adheres to the skin, causing severe burns. 
• Some worsted weight yarns are heavier than others.  I switched to an H hook and changed the first ch 5 to ch 4. 

Stitches - U.S. terms:
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
dtr = double treble
sl st = slip stitch

Instructions - please note, this is made just like a traditional Granny Square except one of the "arms" is longer to form a cross.  I posted a few photos below, 1 of round 1 and several for round 2:

ch 5, join with sl st to form ring
r1      ch 3, 2 dc in ring (ch 3 counts as 1 dc)
    ch 3, 3 dc in ring
    ch 5, 3 dtr in ring
    ch 5, 3 dc in ring
    ch 3, join in top of 1st ch-3 with sl st
    do not turn

(* Vanna's Choice yarn was lighter than what I originally used.  I added an extra dc to keep the cloth from curling.)
